'Five Rivers Challenge'

A new, self-navigated trail run, with a choice of 3 distances: 10K, Half-Marathon or Full Marathon

** COVID-19 UPDATE ** 6th January 2021

The Race Directors have today held an emergency meeting regarding the '5 Rivers Challenge' trail run, scheduled to take place 23rd May 2021.

In the light of the coronavirus pandemic, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel this year's event.

The last week has seen a real escalation in the situation, with a huge number of COVID-19 cases seen across the UK, prompting a government decision to move all English regions into the highest level of 'lock-down'. These tight restrictions are likely to be in place until at least March.

Factoring in the new, more easily transmissible variant, now highly prevalent across the UK, it was felt that the next few weeks will see this situation only escalate further.

Though the UK now has two 'approved' vaccines, the vaccination roll-out plan is expected to extend over many months, so many of our entrants would not be vaccinated by 23rd May.  While all our work has been focused on hosting this year's event, we must prioritise the health and well-being of participants and their families, as well as the many helpers and volunteers needed for the event day.

With the new more stringent limitations on gatherings already being implemented, it was felt the only responsible decision was to cancel this year's event.

There is no set guidance yet available on how long this situation will continue but due to uncertainty, we are not planning to reschedule later this year.

We will continue to monitor the situation over the coming months, in the hope that restrictions will be lifted in time to allow us to plan an event in 2022. We sincerely hope that you will again choose to join us in better post-pandemic times.

Next Steps:

- The Race Directors have instructed SiEntries to fully refund ALL entry fees, including booking fees to all registered entrants.

An email detailing the next steps was sent out to all entrants today.

- Refunds will be made to the credit/debit card used to pay for the entry in the next two weeks.

We apologise for the inconvenience our decision causes to all our runners, and we wish to thank all our volunteers and partners who have supported the '5 Rivers Challenge'.

Kind Regards,

Colin Grace & Mark Blanchard

Liked the route and atmosphere. Additionally, the course marking (very good indeed for a self-navigated course), the enthusiasm of the organisers, facilities at the start, plastic free, zero major bottlenecks on the route, and the value for money. I also felt that the decision to skip chip timing benefited the event, contributing to a more relaxed/friendly nature.

This was amazingly well organised for an inaugural race, and I really hope you run the event again next year.

Liked choice of distances, good routes, good checkpoints and friendly volunteers, nice area to run, tea and coffee and snacks included

Good value for money, well stocked checkpoints, excellent route description, great marshals, good parking, nice course, well organised.

Beautiful route, well written route descriptions, checkpoints were well stocked.

Route was virtually all countryside

The route was amazing. Very friendly.

Easy to find, good directions for all forms of travel in the (very detailed) race instructions, plenty of on-site parking, excellent route descriptions, excellent routes, plenty of checkpoints, excellent organisation and to top it all perfect weather!

For the 2020 event, all routes will start and finish at Allenburys' Club, located in the historical town of Ware, Hertfordshire.

Depending on distance chosen, runners will visit the following rivers: Rib, Beane, Mimram, Lea & Ash.

All three event are narrative trail runs, in which participants follow a set of written directions.

We welcome runners and walkers!

Marathon runners/walkers: we apply a 7-hour cut-off, or 8-hours, for those opting for the 'early bird'* 8:00 am start.
